Water levels remain stable for now

Goedertrouw Dam near eShowe has shifted slightly, dropping from last week's 71.2% to 70.9%

While KZN dams have remained above average, the Department of Water and Sanitation has urged residents to use water sparingly as the warmer season begins.

Goedertrouw Dam near eShowe has shifted slightly, dropping from last week’s 71.2% to 70.9%.

Pongolapoort Dam remains stable at 56.5%.

‘The provincial capacity is steady, but there are dams which are below average, such as one of the province’s largest dams, Albert Falls, declining to 48.9% from last week’s 49.6%,’ said the department’s spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.

He said the low levels are not too concerning as the province’s water supply system, Umgeni, has recorded above average levels of 75.5%, a minimal decline from last week’s 76.7%.

‘We are observing a trend in water levels similar to this period last year, and we are noting that there hasn’t been a significant change,’ said Ratau.

He said they continue to work with the provincial government and water entities to ensure long-term measures to bring water relief to communities affected by shortages.

While there have been delays in the implementation of bulk water projects, Ratau said the department is fast-tracking a number of projects.
