The day was selected by UNESCO in 2015 and was first held on 28 September, 2016.

It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the day of raising awareness of the importance of universal access to information.

The UNESCO resolution was pushed by African civil society groups who were seeking greater information transparency.

This year, the day highlights the role of access to information laws and their implementation to build strong institutions for the public good and sustainable development.

With the coronavirus pandemic still devastating many communities, many South Africans and people around the globe have been using the day to access valuable information about the Covid-19 vaccine, as well as to get a clear understanding on their rights on vaccination.
