New leadership for City of uMhlathuze
Dr Nkonzoyakhe Donda of the IFP was elected unopposed as mayor while EFF councillor Nkululeko Ngubane was elected deputy mayor.
Following a series of disruptions during the first sitting of the uMhlathuze council on Monday and on Tuesday morning, new leadership has been elected to steer the municipality over the next five years.
Dr Nkonzoyakhe Donda of the IFP was elected unopposed as mayor while EFF councillor Nkululeko Ngubane was elected deputy mayor.
Although the position of council speaker initially caused major chaos, the IFP’s Cllr Tobias Gumede was finally elected unopposed.
Councillors to serve in the executive committee were elected from the DA, EFF and IFP. The process of completing the Exco will be finalised at the following meeting, including electing the chief whip.
Speaking after his election, Mayor Donda said, ‘The people of this city have suffered since 2016. In this term of office, we have to put aside all party politics and focus on service delivery to all 34 wards.’
He further thanked his party and all other political parties for agreeing to work together in the City of uMhlathuze.
