5 DIY Christmas gift ideas

Save money this festive season by giving loved ones DIY Christmas gifts

GET creative and make your own, unique homemade Christmas gifts for the special people in your life this festive season.

Sure, it takes time, energy, and effort, but in the end, homemade gifts are more appreciated than those purchased off a shelf in the store.

DIY Christmas gifts also reduce expenditure, a factor in these tough economic times during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Listed below are five ideas one can use to bring a smile to the faces of loved ones on Christmas Day.

Snow globe
Ensure jars are cleaned and dried thoroughly, with all smudges and fingerprints removed.
Use sandpaper to scuff up the underside of the lid to provide a better hold for epoxy.
Attach chosen figurines to the underside of each lid using a dollop of epoxy.
Allow the epoxy to dry until your trees or figurines firmly adhere.
Fill the jar just short of full with distilled water. Add the tiniest drop of glycerin to the water.
Add glitter to the jar, using more or less depending on how snowy you’d like your snow globe to appear.
Insert figurine and screw the lid on firmly and give it a good shake.

Salt dough ornaments

Salt dough ornaments are a classic gift and a great way to keep the children entertained for hours.
Combine 4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup salt, and 1 1/2 cups of warm water in a mixing bowl.
Knead until the dough is firm and smooth. Roll out dough and cut desired shapes.
Bake at 180 degrees until dry and leave to cool completely.

Iron-on socks
Buy a pair of socks and create funny sayings that can be screen-printed onto the soles of the socks, which make great gifts.

Terrarium gift idea
Build a glass terrarium from old picture frames to house plants.

Cutting board spice rack
Re-purpose an old cutting board by using screws to attach small wooden cheese boxes to a rectangular cutting board. Then add a leather strap for hanging.
