Richards Bay port areas restricted to public over festive season

Restricted port sites are Naval Island, the Action Cricket Shed, Small Craft Harbour and the Dredger Reclaim Berth near Alkantstrand

THE Port of Richards Bay says it will close off certain areas of the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront area, Casuarinas, and the T-Jetty and helipad over the festive season.

The closure is to protect Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) property and ensure alignment to law enforcement plans in the area over the December holiday.

As a result, access to Naval Island, the Action Cricket Shed, Small Craft Harbour and the Dredger Reclaim Berth near Alkantstrand is restricted to the public.

There will be controlled access to restaurants at the Small Craft Harbour to allow actual patrons through while prohibiting uncontrolled loitering in areas such as the parking lots.

The grass area in front of the Action Cricket Shed will also be closed off to discourage parking, loitering and disorderly behaviour.

‘We appreciate that cordoned off sites are popular recreational destinations in Richards Bay, especially over the busy festive holiday period.

‘However, there has been recurring inappropriate use of the sites, despite our best efforts to encourage the community to act responsibly.

‘Several safety and security incidents have occurred at the cordoned off sites.

‘Loud parties are held at night. Pollution, dumping of waste, and litter are ongoing challenges, despite daily litter picking and regular clean-ups,’ said Richards Bay port manager Dennis Mqadi.
