How to deal with unexpected visitors this festive season
The dreaded knock on the door during the festive season could mean the worst... you have to accommodate guests without warning. Luckily, this is easily managed with a few simple tips!

WHEN the festive season arrives, well-laid plans are often scuppered and gracious hosts need to adapt to new realities.
One of these realities could be the arrival of an unexpected guest, and whether they just forgot to warn you of their intended plans or they’re accompanying an invited guest, you need to find a way to accommodate them…or not.
Here are some tips for dealing with unexpected visitors over the festive season.
Tip 1: If a family member or friend arrives expecting to stay for some time, but you cannot accommodate them (and with the second wave of Covid-19, this is completely acceptable) then you will need to be gracious but firm. Let them know that you are keen to join them for a meal while they’re in town, but you’re just unable to accommodate them at this time.
Tip 2: If you do have space to accommodate unexpected visitors this festive season, then you need to remember it’s not up to you to have to do everything. Share the responsibilities of preparing meals and tidying up with the rest of the family and guests.
Tip 3: Prioritise your chores. It’s not necessary to have a spotless household when you have guests – particularly unexpected ones, so just prioritise the ‘must clean’ items and spaces. Everyone can tidy up their own rooms, whereas areas like the kitchen and bathroom will require some extra attention.
Tip 4: It’s best to have a few meals prepared and frozen for any circumstance, and this is particularly useful over the festive season when those unexpected visitors pop around. Items such as mince, lasagne, and pies are filling options that can quickly be defrosted and warmed up. This also means you’re not spending all your time in the kitchen.
Tip 5: Encourage your guests to explore the sights and sounds, lockdown measures allowing. This gives you some time to yourself and gives you a chance to sort things out at home before returning. Even if they just go for a walk around the block, it eases the burden of constantly entertaining!
Tip 6: Return the favour! You can make a plan to visit the guests at their own home next time around. You can be nice and warn them, or just pop in unexpectedly. The choice is yours!
