Preparing your vehicle before hitting the road

MIWA urges holidaymakers to have their vehicles checked before hitting the road this holiday season

LIKE they always do before the start of another festive season, the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) is urging the public to have their vehicles checked before hitting the road.

According to MIWA, hundreds of accidents occur on our roads every year during the festive season.

The motor industry body also revealed that every December, workshops are flooded with motorists wanting vehicle checks and needing repairs just days before they plan to leave on holiday.

What motorists don’t realise is that, should maintenance be needed on their vehicle and spare parts not be in stock, these need to be ordered.

This could take several days, if the parts are available at all. It is risky to leave things to the last minute and could put a real dampener on holiday plans.

MIWA explained that mechanics should do a thorough check of the vehicle, which will include a road test and an assessment of the following parts:

  • Lights
  • Suspension
  • Drivelines
  • Brakes
  • Tyres (including the spare and tools)
  • Fluid levels
  • Wipers and windscreen
  • V belts
  • Exhaust

If a problem is identified, the mechanic will advise the vehicle owner and provide a quote for repairs needed.

MIWA advised motorists to make use of MIWA-accredited workshops around the country.
