Top road safety tips for the festive season

These tips will help you stay safe on the roads when travelling during the holiday period

ROAD safety cannot be stressed enough as it is a time when many South Africans are on the roads whether for a quick getaway or a longer holiday.

Staying safe on the roads is of paramount importance to ensure you and your family members don’t become just another road fatality statistic.

Here are the top road safety tips for the festive season:

  • Always obey the rules of the road
  • Don’t get behind the wheel when intoxicated
  • Wear seatbelts whether you’re a driver or a passenger in the front or back seats
  • Drive at the speed limit and at a safe following distance
  • Drive at a speed that will allow you time and space to respond to emergencies (i.e. another vehicle coming to a sudden stop in front of you)
  • Do not assume safety – stay alert and avoid distraction
  • Do not assume others are driving safely – anticipate hazards and stay alert
  • Approach and proceed across intersections with caution – never forget to look both ways
  • Do not drive when you’re feeling tired or fatigued
  • Keep your vehicle in roadworthy condition
  • Only overtake when it is absolutely safe to do so
  • Share the roads responsibly and safely
