Taxi security guilty of attempted murder

Mtubatuba man convicted, sentenced for attempted murder of meter driver

The man charged with the attempted murder of a meter taxi driver in Mtubatuba has been convicted and sentenced.

The Mtubatuba Regional Court this week found Sahluko Mthembu (32), a security guard for a taxi association, guilty of taxi violence-related attempted murder.

He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

The court heard that on the morning of 5 December 2019, two teachers hired a meter taxi to transport them to a primary school where they worked.

Mthembu followed the meter taxi to KwaMduku in Hluhluwe, where he fired several shots at the driver without saying a word. The driver managed to escape without injuries.

After three years of no breakthrough, the case was transferred to the Provincial Taxi Violence unit, which managed to connect Mthembu to the crime and arrested him within a month.

Police investigations revealed that Mthembu shot the driver because he accused him of transporting minibus taxi clients without authority.
