Melomed gynaecologist leads battle against cervical cancer
Dr Moodley spearheaded a successful pap smear drive in Zululand, where hundreds of women underwent cervical screenings and medical advice at no cost
ZULULAND’S first female obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Jayeshnee Moodley continued her trailblazing streak this August in celebration of Women’s Month. In collaboration with Melomed Hospital, Pathcare, and her gynaecologist colleagues Dr Ntsako Nkanyane and Dr Siyanda Zulu (‘Team Gynae’), pap smear drives were held at Melomed Hospital, Ngwelezana Hospital and Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of cervical cancer.
“We are proud to have been part of this phenomenal initiative in raising awareness of cancers affecting women, and cervical cancer in particular, during Women’s Month. Awareness and early detection remains pivotal in fighting the battle against cancer.” Dr Jayeshnee Moodley
This year’s drive enjoyed even greater success, as more women came out in numbers to undergo screenings and education about cervical cancer. The turnout at Boardwalk alone was 100 screenings.
“I would like to thank Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre for allowing us the opportunity to raise awareness and take cervical cancer screening to the community, and Melomed Richards Bay and Pathcare for making this vision bigger and better. Thank you to everyone who has helped raise awareness of cervical cancer and the importance of cervical screening.”
Dr Moodley encourages women to know their risk. She said that it’s always better to know your risk, and this annual drive is to ensure women make their health a priority.
Together, cancer can be beaten!
