World Cup: Tunisia confound the critics with Denmark draw

Evenly-matched Denmark and Tunisia trade blow for blow on day 3 of the Soccer World Cup #TacklingQatar2022

SOMETIMES a 0-0 draw is boring. This was not one of those times.

This Group D game had it all, as two evenly-matched sides traded blow for blow and took turns at having the ascendency.

Paradoxically, the team that played the better football from the purist’s point of view, and controlled most of the game (Denmark) had fewer shots at goal than the side that relied on sweat and commitment.

The Tunisians actually had the ball in the back of the net in the 23rd minute but VAR ruled it offside.

They were on target again just before the break but Kasper Schmeichel showed his hand-eye co-ordination with a superb reflex block.

The second half was another see-saw affair, with Tunisia seeing two shots deflected wide of goal and Denmark having the ball in the net but ruled offside.

They also had a solid penalty shout denied at the death after a ball-hits-hand call in the dying moments.

A one-point draw is closer to a loss than it is to a win in the group stage, and neither side will be happy with the outcome.

Denmark, who trained in black kit in sympathy with the thousands of migrant workers who reportedly died during construction of Qatar’s soccer stadiums, might wear black armbands if they lose their next fixture, against France.
