World Cup: Peerless Spain in seventh heaven

Spain sent out a clear warning to all-comers with an impeccable display of complete football

SEVEN shots on target and seven goals the outcome.

Spain sent out a clear warning to all-comers with an impeccable display of complete football to overpower Costa Rica 7-0 on Wednesday evening.

The new-generation young guns toyed with the opposition, combining perfect passing with fantastic finishing.

They won’t find every team at the World Cup this easy to undo, but this was by far the best showing we’ve seen at Qatar all week.

Germany’s shock loss to Japan will give the Spaniards added buoyancy, as will the incredible goal count, in the unlikely event of a count-out at the end of the group stage.

There’s no sympathy on a football pitch and with the arrogance of matadors, the Spanish conquistadors captured all before them as they gave the Central Americans seven kinds of hell.

This was the inquisition at its most ruthless and Costa Rica simply had no answers; it looked like 12 men against 10.

All the goals were good ones, exhibiting individual and team brilliance, and calmness in front of goal no other team has shown to this point.

Spain scored three times in the first half; the first when Dani Olmo controlled a long ball, swivelled and placed it past Keylor Navas – who surely had a stiff neck and sore back by the end of the game from retrieving the ball from the back of the net.

The second saw Jordi Alba feed Marco Asensio in the box and there was only going to be one outcome after his sweetly-timed strike (2-0).

There was a third before half-time as Alba was brought down and Ferran Torres easily scored from the spot (3-0).

A determined Torres, Spain’s youngest ever World Cup selection, shook off would-be tackles to grab his second and his country’s fourth to begin the second half procession.

Gavi made it five with another pure strike, Carlo Soler made it six and Alvaro Morata made seven to crown the flawless exhibition.
