World Cup: Swiss on a roll after narrow but worthy 1-0 win

Play swung from end to with plenty of decent chances, but most were skied or skewed

THIS was another of those ‘to and fro, high and low’ games, with play swinging from end to end with plenty of decent chances, but most either being skied or skewed.

Cameroon were quick out the blocks and had a couple of great early attempts that were brilliantly thwarted by Yann Sommer in the Switzerland goals.

It became rather predictable as Swiss rolled the ball patiently and methodically while Cameroon piled on pressure with quick breakaways that had their opponents panicking.

Had it not been for the heroics of Switzerland defender Steven Widmer, the story of the match might have had a different ending.

The Swiss bounced back and two chances in quick succession from Ruben Vargas corners just before the break were spurned by Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji.

But the Swiss were on the score sheet soon after resumption of play when Breel Embolo put the finishing touch to some cute interplay.

Switzerland would have more moments in the match but the score remained that way: 1-0 and three points to the men in red.

Morocco showed signs that they might well pick up points in their remaining group games.
