World Cup: Unimpressive England pick up another point

Unlucky not to have gained all three points, the USA dominated for large spells

A SCORELESS draw between England and the USA on Friday night opened the door wide for all Group B teams.

The Three Lions head the group with four points after the draw and the previous 6-2 win over Iran who, in turn, have three points, USA 2 and Wales 1, allowing for various permutations, with one fixture each to be played.

USA must be considered unlucky not to gain all three points. Not only did they have the best chance of the game when Christian Pulisic rattled the cross bar in the first half, but they dominated for large spells, forcing England to work much harder than they would have liked and closing down spaces through sheer hustle.

Not that the Three Lions didn’t have their own opportunities, especially after Jack Grealish and Jordan Henderson were brought on, changing the complexion of the play with creativity and a directness that had been lacking.

Also not making an impact was skipper Harry Kane, who was repeatedly beaten to the ball by more energetic markers.

He also had the chance to win the game in the closing minutes when he headed powerfully but wide from a pinpoint Kieran Trippier free kick. On his better days he would have dispatched that with ease.

Pick of the England side was Luke Shaw, while Pulisic would surely have been named man of the match.

England next face Wales, while the USA and Iran will lock horns, both games on Tuesday.
