World Cup: Portugal’s rising star helps give Switzerland six of the best

Portugal didn’t just win, they did it in style, nullifying the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka

OUT with the old and in with the new.

Roughly translated, that means Ronaldo (37) on the bench and Goncalo Ramos (21) included in the run-on side for Portugal’s Round of 16 game against Switzerland on Tuesday night.

Filling the formidable boots of CR7 might have intimidated the rising Benfica youngster.

Perish the thought! His fine finishing saw the debutant nail a hat trick with the skill of a seasoned campaigner.

He did, though, get by with quite a little help from his friends in the traditional red and green.

Portugal didn’t just win, they did it in style, nullifying the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka. The build-up play from the players behind him was unbelievable, as the likes of Bernado Silva, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix simply dismantled the normally dependent Swiss clockwork mechanism.

A knockout game it certainly was, and the Swiss were on the canvas from the start.

Ramos’ first goal was a belter as he beat Yann Sommer from an improbable angle, drilling the ball into the roof of the net via the top left corner (1-0).

Otavio and Ramos both shot straight at the keeper but the second Portuguese goal wasn’t long in coming as a Fernandes corner was nodded home by the oldest man on the field, 39-year-old captain Pepe (1-0).

Nodded home? More like a Liverpool kiss, a ferocious head butt.

Ramos would have his brace on 50 minutes as he took up a clever position on the near post in anticipation of the precise cross from Diogo Dalot to nutmeg Sommer (3-0).

Minutes later he was on the board again when defender Raphael Guerreiro glided down the flank from left back and fed Ramos who rammed it home unerringly (4-0).

Manuel Akanji, at the far post tapped in a deflected corner for a Swiss consolation (4-1).

However, normal service was soon restored and Ramos had his hat trick on debut when he received a Fernandes pass and dinked it over Sommer (5-1).

At the final whistle it was 6-0 as Rafael Leao picked his spot and looped the ball over Sommer, who must have required physio after the game from picking the ball out the net all night.

As one-side as any game could be and the Swiss will be keen to breathe some clean mountain air after being suffocated by the heat of Qatar…and the peri peri Portuguese.
