Richards Bay teens team up to fight hunger

Pooling their pocket money, the 'Rebels Against Hunger' are assisting community members in need with groceries

THROUGH their acts of kindness and generosity, a group of teenagers from Aquadene Secondary School have been pooling their pocket money to buy groceries for families in need on a monthly basis.

Dubbing themselves the Rebels Against Hunger, the group of youngsters aged 15 to 17 from Mzingazi, eNseleni, eSikhaleni, Mandlazini and Aquadene launched their organisation to focus on the upliftment of their community and to make a difference in society.

The high school learners said they sympathise with families who may begin each day with the pain of not knowing what is to come, so they prioritised the lives and well-being of those in need.

Their message is that no one should go to bed on an empty stomach.

Every month the youngsters identify two families in their community in need of essential foodstuffs, and contribute from their pocket money to buy groceries for those particular families, using public transport for their shopping and deliveries.

They understand that only food might not be enough for a person, but as a new group they aspire to grow and help more people through more acts of service to humanity.
