Transnet suspends port-bound trucks for festive season

Reprieve for Richards Bay motorists as truck suspension frees up region's roadways

ZULULAND motorists will experience a reprieve in truck volumes on the N2 and John Ross highways from tomorrow (Friday).

This as Transnet Port Terminal (TPT) today announced a festive season suspension of trucks transporting cargo to the Port of Richards Bay. All trucks are expected to have off-loaded and be cleared by Monday, 23 December. The suspension is in effect until 3 January.

TPT managing executive Thulasizwe Dlamini says the port continues to receive an abnormal number of RMTs bringing cargo, a situation that has placed immense pressure on the N2 and John Ross.

“The City of uMhlathuze traffic department has reported constraints in terms of resources to control RMTs on the N2,” said Dlamini.

He said, to mitigate against these risks as well as to ease the RMTs on the public roads so motorists can freely utilise the road networks without truck congestion during the festive season, the terminal resorted to suspend all long-distance trucks.

The terminal is expected to resume off-loading in the new year, with harbour-bound operations direct to vessels continuing as usual.
