Elephant calf drowns in flooding Mfolozi River

Body of elephant calf drown victim recovered at low-level bridge over Mfolozi River on Saturday

After having washed down the swollen Mfolozi River over the weekend, an elephant calf has been appropriately buried.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said it was assumed that the calf came from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

“It was already dead with the skin peeling when we were made aware of it. Our staff fetched it and buried it accordingly,” said Mntambo.

The carcass was found at the Mfolozi low-level bridge near the sugar mill in Mtubatuba on Saturday afternoon.

The river has been in flood since the onset of heavy rainfall in the inland catchment areas in recent weeks.

In the first few days of heavy rain two weeks ago, the river burst its banks and measured 1km in width at the bridge over the N2 south of KwaMsane.
