The curious case of the parked car in Richards Bay CBD

Businessowners and operators raised safety concerns over a rundown vehicle that was parked for months in the Richards Bay CBD

A parked car at the centre of health and safety concerns in Richards Bay CBD has been removed by the municipality.

Much activity surrounded the rundown Opel Cadet, which was parked in Rupee Riff since the beginning of the year, with individuals frequenting it throughout the day.

It is alleged that the vehicle was being used as accommodation, as people were found sleeping inside.

On Monday, the City of uMhlathuze intervened after the matter was brought to their attention.

Nearby businessowners and operators raised concerns for their safety when entering and exiting their premises, as well as the public indecency aspect as occupants of the vehicle could be seen changing their clothing in the mornings before heading out for the day.

Employees in the area say they did not feel safe when locking up late in the evenings, as there were always suspicious people loitering near the vehicle.

While locals initially thought the vehicle would be removed, weeks turned into months and the activity in and around the stationary car only escalated.

The vehicle’s tyres were flat, one window was broken, and all the windows were covered with clothing, with the inside not visible.

While the situation of the occupants could not be verified, concerns were that vagrants were occupying it.

The City of uMhlathuze confirmed this was a contravention of nuisance by-laws, and such cases must be reported to the municipality’s traffic department on 035 9075633.
