Electronic voting open for public comment

E-VOTING is on the cards, and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) calls on South Africans to comment.

Citizens have until October to give input, with potential implementation of the system at the next local government elections, to be held between November 2026 and January 2027.

The commission last month hosted an international conference on the feasibility of electronic voting in South Africa, with a policy discussion document launched.

The document outlines numerous items, including reasons for considering e-voting, relevant constitutional principles, and relative benefits and challenges.

Public and stakeholder concerns were addressed regarding institutionalised challenges, marginalised groups, illiteracy and accessibility.
