WATCH: N2 snow closure in Kokstad, hail in Jozini and Hluhluwe

Strong gale force winds expected for Richards Bay, while winter weather brings snow to southern KZN

Blizzard-like conditions have gripped KZN, bringing disruptive snow to the Eastern Cape and southern parts of KZN.

This as the cut-off low pressure system, responsible for much of the heavy weather, exits South Africa over the country’s south-east today (Tuesday).

Travellers are being urged not to drive to Kokstad to look for the snow, as the N2 and several smaller routes have been closed, with trucks and other vehicles stacked, owing to the snowfall.

“I wish to advise motorists and the people of KwaZulu-Natal that our highly efficient team from Road Traffic Inspectorate has closed the N2 due to snowfall around Kokstad and Port Shepstone,” said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma.

“To save lives, we have decided to completely close the road between Kokstad and Pietemaritzburg, as well as the R603 Tacoma to Reit.

“Our message to motorists and snow chasers is that prevention is better than cure. We therefore urge motorists and general members of the public to avoid that area at all costs by delaying their trips leading to Kokstad as trucks are already stuck and creating huge congestion.”

Closer to home, last night (Monday) saw hailstorms hit Jozini and Hluhluwe.

Some 12 weather warnings have been issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), warning of disruptive rain- and snowfall, mostly in the Eastern Cape, with the extreme south of KZN also affected.

“Damaging winds resulting in injuries and danger to life from flying debris, damage to settlements (formal and informal), loss of agricultural production, some structural damage and transport routes and travel services affected by wind or falling trees are expected in the south of KZN,” said the SAWS, issuing an orange level 5 warning for the affected part of the province.

Strong winds have been reported on the R34 in the Vryheid area, with winds reportedly ‘pushing trucks around’, and much debris along the route.

Included in a yellow level 4 warning for damaging winds, but with a ‘low likelihood of significant impacts’, according to the SAWS, are parts of the Zululand region.

These include: Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Mandeni, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, uMlalazi, uMhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze and Pongola.
