Severe weather leaves a local trail of destruction

Disaster Management teams are assessing the extent of severe weather damage and rendering services to those affected

STRONG winds left a trail of destruction across the Zululand region this week, not least the uMlalazi area.

On Monday afternoon, several homes were destroyed and electricity poles fell down, leaving many residents in the dark.

As at Wednesday morning, Disaster Management teams were out in their numbers to assess the extent of the damage.

One of the affected residents, Ruth Khanyile (88) of KwaKhoza reserve outside eShowe, said her electricity box was left exposed after the roof of the house was blown off.

“One of my grandchildren was cooking when the strong wind started. It blew off a zinc sheet, and my granddaughter panicked and ran out of the house. The entire roof followed and I saw all the roof sheets being blown away. Both houses were left roofless.”
