Transport department cracks down on delinquent drivers

R43bn in injury benefits paid out by Road Accident Fund to citizens aged 15 - 35 between 2020 and 2022

In a bid to make KZN’s roads safer for all, the Department of Transport (DoT) on Friday announced measures to clamp down on delinquent drivers.

Holding a series of multidisciplinary roadblocks throughout the province, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma aims to highlight KZN’s woeful road fatality statistics.

“Since the long weekend of 13-16 June, we recorded over 1 100 cars passing through tollgates, particularly along the N3,” said Duma.

“With Durban July scheduled for this weekend, we want to ensure visitors to the province are safe on our roads.

“Disturbingly, over the past five years, more than 70 000 young South Africans aged 15 to 35 have lodged personal claims with the Road Accident Fund (RAF), amounting to 43.5% of all claims.

“Between 2020 and 2022, the RAF paid out R43-billion in injury benefits to young accident survivors aged 15 to 34 – an average of R14-billion per year.

“Statistics show that most of the accidents take place in winter and over weekends.”
