R34 multi-vehicle accident highlights need for responsible controlled burning
KZN transport department issues safety tips for motorists when roadside fires reduce visibility
Acknowledging the importance of controlled fires during KZN’s dry winter months, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has issued a plea to those involved, to notice the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), especially when undertaking controlled burning adjacent to freeways and national routes.
This follows a multi-vehicle accident on the R34 near Utrecht this (Tuesday) morning as a result of reduced visibility owing to smoke.
While there were no fatalities in the collision, two people sustained serious injuries.
“We acknowledge the importance of controlled fires as part of land management and for other purposes,” said Duma.
“However, we plead with those involved, especially along the freeway and other routes, to alert RTI and traffic departments in various municipalities.”
Duma issued the following tips for motorists when approaching uncontrolled fires:
– If visibility becomes very poor, don’t attempt to drive through thick smoke or flames
– Many accidents occur when drivers fail to stop and end up colliding with stationary vehicles
– Reduce speed to avoid head-on collisions with other vehicles attempting to drive through from the opposite direction
– Switch on your headlights and hazards so you are as visible as possible to other vehicles, particularly emergency workers and firefighters
