4 Tips to get your body summer ready
The 'battle of the bulge' can be a relentless war but there are some changes you can implement to get your desired summer body...
While the comfort food may be screaming for your attention on these cold, wintry days and nights, it is said that summer bodies are made in winter.
The ‘battle of the bulge’ can be defined as a relentless war, and for those who emerge victorious, there are not only significant health benefits, but also an evident boost in confidence.
When starting your weight loss journey, it is important to remember that it is a marathon and not a sprint, with some experts saying it takes about a year to see the fruits of your labour.
However, there are some changes you can implement today to help you feel a bit more confident this summer.
• Sustainability:
While fad diets such as low-carb diets were all the craze in the 90s and early 2000s, experts say they are not sustainable for long-term results. Carbohydrates fuel your muscles, which gives you the energy to endure workouts. Carbs are not the enemy.
Eat whole foods like lean proteins (skinless chicken breast, white fleshed fish, lean beef and pork), complex carbs (found in whole grains, vegetables and legumes) and healthy fats (avocado, walnuts and chia seeds). While eating healthy, do not make the mistake of overeating; instead, practice portion control or download a calorie-counting app to help you keep track of your calorie consumption
• Weight train:
For years, weight training was believed to be only for bodybuilders, but the benefits of lifting weights can help with body recomposition, which simply means you will look ‘snatched’. Include weights in your exercise regimen at least three to four times a week
• Cardio:
Moderate-intensity cardio is not only good for your heart, but will also work wonders for your physique and endurance. Walking, incline walks, stepping, running or cycling are all viable options depending on your preference
• High-intensity interval training (HIIT):
To burn additional calories, HIIT is a technique that alternates between short periods of intense exercise followed by brief recovery periods. It is effective for those who do not have much time.
While consistency is key, it is important to remember that comparison is the thief of joy, so do not compare yourself to anyone, as results differ and are dependent on your age, gender and physique.
