The grieving Ntombela family from Ulundi, who lost four of their loved ones in the tragic R66 accident near Gingindlovu over the weekend, is grappling to come to terms with the magnitude of their loss.

Five people lost their lives in the accident, which involved a bakkie and a hatchback, and occurred on Sunday night.

It is believed the family was travelling to Durban when tragedy struck.

The deceased were identified as Makhosi Ntombela (60), Thuli Dlamini (42), Sipho Zungu (6), Abenathi Ntombela (9 months), and Kaserol Michael (age unknown).

Reports indicate that a light motor vehicle carrying eight passengers was struck by a bakkie.

Tragically, four of the deceased – two of whom were children – belonged to the Ntombela family, while the fifth deceased was from the bakkie.

Ulundi Mayor Wilson Ntshangase and his executive members visited the Ntombela family to mourn alongside them and to offer support during their time of profound grief.

Ntshangase said as part of a humanitarian gesture, they donated groceries to assist the family in preparing meals for mourners and visitors throughout the mourning period.

He also expressed his condolences on behalf of the municipality.

“The loss of such young and promising lives is a tragedy, not only to the family but to the entire Ulundi community. We stand with the Ntombela family in their sorrow and will continue to provide support where we can,” said the mayor.
