One Home, One Garden drive tackles poverty in Zululand region

Greening programme expanded to include churches, schools, hospitals and clinics

Food insecurity and poverty are being tackled in KZN through the One Home, One Garden programme.

Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa is now expanding this to include churches and other public institutions.

She spoke last Friday at a business seminar at Christian Fellowship Centre International Church in Ncotshane, Pongola as part of the poverty alleviation programme.

She distributed thousands of seedlings, encouraging congregants to cultivate yards at their churches and homes. The seedlings included spinach (2000), cabbage (3000), green paper (10 000) and onion (10 000).

“We have expanded our One Home, One Garden programme to include churches and government institutions like schools, hospitals and clinics, ensuring food security in households,” said the MEC.

“We will support them by providing seeds and seedlings to make their yards green. We also offer assistance with poultry, cattle, goats and other farming activities.

“I encourage our communities to attend agricultural workshops, which further equip them with skills to manage their poultry and other farming businesses.”

kaMadlopha-Mthethwa explained that funding is available through government grants made available by the Office of the Premier, including the Youth and Women Fund, Agribusiness Development Agency, and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development project funding, which will soon be advertised publicly.
