Taxi driver sought after R34 accident near Empangeni

KZN Transport MEC calls for harsh punishment after driver allegedly flees accident scene on R34 near Empangeni

The KZN MEC for Transport is pleading with community members to come forward with information following an accident on the R34 between Empangeni and eShowe on Sunday.

According to the department, a minibus taxi was carrying family members who were travelling from Empangeni to Emasangweni when it reportedly rear-ended a Ford Ranger, causing both vehicles to veer off the road and down an embankment.

It is alleged that the driver of the minibus taxi fled the scene of the accident.

“Upon arrival at the scene of the accident, our dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate and members of the South African Police Service found that the driver had run away from the accident scene,” MEC Siboniso Duma said in a statement.

“Between nine and fourteen passengers could have died in that accident

“By law, it is a criminal offence to run away from the scene of the accident. What this reckless driver has done is equal to a hit-and-run.

“We want to ensure that he faces prosecution and a sentence of up to nine years in jail,” he added.

He reminded motorists and members of the public that a driver involved in an accident, even if not at fault, is legally obligated to stop their vehicle.

“The accident must be reported to the police, and a driver should not leave the scene until authorised by the police.

“If anyone is injured, the driver must assist them and ensure they receive medical attention,” said Duma.
