Police initiative inspires change in fellow men

Zululand police cluster Men for Change programme seeks to educate men on gender-based violence and femicide

The Men for Change programme under the Zululand policing cluster has one mission: to fight gender-based violence and femicide (GBV-F) in their communities.

Thursday saw an imbizo being held, starting with a peaceful march in Vryheid, where men joined forces to promote the fight against crime and GBV-F.

Police reminded the attendees that help is available in every situation, and urged them to approach the police for help should they need it.

Zululand Cluster police spokesperson Captain Nkosie Gwala said the main objective of the imbizo was to inform local men that Men For Change is armed with knowledge on how to handle and channel their emotions, and how to choose to do better.

“Men for Change teaches them that engaging in GBV-F or any other form of abuse is not the right way to deal with situations. There are better, effective methods that do not include abusing another.,” said Gwala.

“The men were given a platform to engage and voice their concerns about crime and GBV, which is a pressing issue in our society. They spoke out on how this affects and impacts their lives. “They added input on how these social ills can be dealt with and eradicated.

“All the valuable points and ideas shared at the imbizo have left all of us with a lot to reflect on and consider moving forward,” she said.

Gwala said the event was attended by various departments such as SAPS, CPF, Correctional Services, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Land Affairs, Humana (NGO), Abaqulusi Municipality, and RTI (Road Traffic Inspectorate).
