Spring has sprung along the Zululand coast

Angler’s angles from the Bay

Spring is a period of transition; a time when the winter edibles start to slow down and the big inedibles of summer start making an appearance on the Zululand coast.

With the appearance of big sea and strong winds, the fishing over the last two weeks has been slow, however, St Lucia has been fishing well, with a lot of shad and cob on offer.

In fact, a few good-sized cob have been caught off these beaches.

The odd butterfly ray has also put in an appearance along local coastline. At this time of year, these fish are often caught on live mullet when fishing for garrick.

Dean Reddy and his team members from Inkwazi Angling Club went up to Mission Rocks just north of St Lucia, and were rewarded with some good quality ‘scratch fish’.

It was interesting to see a few good quality bronze bream being landed, an unusual catch for this area.

Last week, Barry Tedder, while targeting garrick, was rewarded with a 32kg giant kingfish, which was safely released to fight another day.

On Saturday, a local angler fishing in Richards Bay hooked and landed a very nice cob.

Until next time, tight lines and please keep our beaches clean.
