TikTok slang enters Cambridge Dictionary

The latest evolution of the English language has given a nod to the TikTok generation’s influence on the spoken word.

This as ‘skibidi’, ‘tradwife’ and ‘delulu’ are among the new words added to the Cambridge Dictionary.

More than 6 000 words have just been added to the Cambridge Dictionary, with other internet slang such as ‘broligarchy’ and ‘lewk’ also making the cut.

According to Cambridge Dictionary, ‘broligarchy’ is defined as: “a small group of men, especially men owning or involved in a technology business, who are extremely rich and powerful, and who have or want political influence. The word is a mixture of bro and oligarchy”.

‘Lewk’ is “a particular style, fashion, or outfit (= a set of clothes worn together), especially one that is unusual and impressive”.

For those not part of the TikTok generation, ‘skibidi’ can have different meanings, such as ‘cool’ or ‘bad’, or can be used with no real meaning as a joke, while ‘tradwife’ is “a married woman, especially one who posts on social media, who stays at home doing cooking, cleaning, etc, and has children she takes care of. Tradwife is short for traditional wife”.
