6 reasons you may suffer from leg cramps at night
Here are six reasons a ‘charley horse’ might be getting you up at night.
While many people dread the sound of the alarm in the morning, there is one thing more painful than being woken up by the alarm, and that is leg cramps.
Known as a ‘charley horse’, the sudden, sharp and intense knot forming while you are in dreamland can spring you out of bed without the need to hit the snooze button.
Even though a variety of factors may lead to this ‘rude’ awakening, here are six reasons a ‘charley horse’ might be getting you up at night:
1. Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids can cause an interruption in the balance of electrolytes in your body, therefore increasing your risk of cramping.
2. Magnesium deficiency: Low levels of this crucial mineral may trigger involuntary muscle movements.
3. Lack of potassium and calcium: Similar to magnesium, potassium and calcium are vital for good muscle function. People can boost their potassium with foods such as bananas and leafy greens, and opt for foods such as milk, cheese, and broccoli for a much-needed calcium boost.
4. Muscle strain: Overusing your muscles can be as detrimental as living a sedentary lifestyle. While both lifestyle choices can result in sleepless nights. Exercising without warming up can place strain on your muscles, resulting in tightness and cramps.
5. Poor circulation: Oxygen is imperative for muscles to function and thrive; a limited blood flow, especially when lying down, can reduce the amount of oxygen travelling to the legs.
6. Poor sleeping posture: While maintaining good posture is a must throughout the day, the same can be said for when we are sleeping. Falling asleep in awkward positions can put unnecessary tension and strain on nerves, cutting your beauty sleep short as a result.
