Richards Bay gas terminal prioritised in SA’s energy transition

TNPA and Nersa sign memorandum of understanding to bolster sustainable energy supply and infrastructure development

It is a major push to get the country’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at the Port of Richards Bay operational by 2028.

This follows last week’s signing of a memorandum of understanding between Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).

It forms part of ongoing efforts to boost energy supply and infrastructure development across the country.

The agreement will ensure alignment in the licensing and operation of petroleum and LNG facilities, as well as electricity generation, distribution and transmission facilities.
