Empangeni SAPS commended for protecting women and children

Zululand-based team has successfully obtained 30 convictions of crimes perpetrated against women and children this year

The SAPS Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit was on Friday lauded by the national police department for going above their call of duty to protect women and children.

According to a statement released by SAPS, the Zululand-based team has successfully obtained 30 convictions of crimes perpetrated against women and children in the last year.

Of the judgments, 20 were life sentences, while the other 10 were jail terms amounting to a combined 275 years.

Evidence of their devotion to fighting crime was when the team tracked down serial rapist Mzamo Gumede (38), who raped 10 women, including a 17-year-old girl between 2014 and 2022.

In October last year, the Mtubatuba High Court handed Gumede 10 life terms for the rapes.

The long arm of the law handed him an additional 15 years for robbery and added his name to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
