THERE has been another hyena attack at the Cape Vidal camping site.

A young male was rushed to Netcare The Bay Hospital after being mauled by two hyenas on Saturday night.

The young man – whose identity is known – desperately fought back, he went for the eyes of one and the throat of the other, even shoving his hand down its throat.

Miraculously, he managed to fend them off and suffer no life-threatening injuries, but the hyena bit his hand as he withdrew it from its mouth. He also suffered other deep lacerations and claw scratches to his face and scalp.

Speaking to his father at Netcare The Bay Hospital, where the victim was undergoing reconstruction surgery to his face and hand on Sunday afternoon, the ZO was told that prevention of infection is also a priority.

The family has travelled from eShowe to be with him.

The incident follows a similar one three weeks ago when a Johannesburg man was bitten on his nose while sleeping in a tent.

Aggressive hyenas have now virtually taken over the Cape Vidal camp site, and one of the two seen over the weekend was described as ‘massive’.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Communications Manager confirmed the incident and said it would be addressed.
