Manguzi man sentenced for raping elderly woman (85)

Ingwavuma Regional court hands down life sentence to convicted rapist

Justice has been served for a Manguzi woman (85) after her rapist (27) was this week handed a life sentence by Ingwavuma Regional Court.

KZN Division NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the complainant lived alone.

“In the middle of the night on 15 December 2024, she noticed the accused inside her bedroom. He told her to remain quiet if she wanted to live, and raped her on more than one occasion,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

The victim managed to escape and ran to her neighbour’s house for assistance. However, she didn’t receive a response and was found unconscious in the morning.

“When she woke up, she told her neighbours about her ordeal and was taken to hospital. Following the incident, the accused confessed to his siblings that he had raped the complainant and wanted to commit suicide. The police were contacted and he was arrested,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

The woman’s victim impact statement, issued by the victim’s daughter-in-law, says she used to enjoy her independence but is now afraid to be alone.

“She said the woman is even fearful of her own male grandsons, thinking they will also abuse her,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

“The NPA welcomes the life sentence handed down. Elderly persons are protected by legislation due to their vulnerability and ought to be able to live in a peaceful and safe environment.”
