KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma inspects repairs being conducted on the R34 near Empangeni, addresses stop-and-go concerns

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma has directed engineers to ensure there is no stop-and-go traffic on the R34 over the festive season.

He was speaking during an inspection of the repairs of the R34 between Empangeni and Nkwalini on Saturday.

Duma also instructed engineers to reduce waiting times from an hour to under 15 minutes.

Trucks travel on the R34 on a daily basis

While the rehabilitation of the badly damaged road is a welcome relief for motorists, the waiting times on the stop-and-go had caused major frustration among motorists who travel on the route daily.

“I have mandated the team and engineers to ensure that there is no stop and go on the R34 during the festive season.

“The team is tasked with the responsibility of reducing waiting times from an hour to strictly under 15 minutes. In addition, innocent people have lost their lives as a result of trucks transporting coal.”

“Consequently, teams of engineers and officials from the permit office are urgently exploring the possibility of redirecting trucks to other routes. We are also going to be strict on the issuing of permits for abnormal load,” said Duma.
