Sea Rescue warns of dangerous spring tides during new moon weekend

New moon spring tides bring stronger currents, rip currents and waves, prompting NSRI safety warnings.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urges beachgoers and coastal visitors to exercise extra caution during the new moon spring tide peaking this Saturday, 20 December.

The phenomenon, caused by the alignment of the sun, moon and earth during the new moon phase, significantly increases tidal variation and will affect coastal conditions throughout the weekend and into the following days.

NSRI communications manager Andrew Ingram says spring tides are characterised by higher-than-normal high tides, lower low tides and a maximum tidal range.

“These conditions often lead to stronger tidal currents, particularly in narrow inlets and around coastal landmarks,” said Ingram.

According to the NSRI, potential hazards during this period include intensified rip currents at beaches, strong tidal flows and higher waves that may reach beyond usual safe zones for anglers.

This may lead to some coastal hiking trails becoming inaccessible or dangerous during afternoon high tides.

“To stay safe, the NSRI advises swimmers to use lifeguard-protected beaches and swim between the flags. Beachgoers should familiarise themselves with rip current warning signs and consult daily weather forecasts and tide tables,” said Ingram.

“Rock and surf anglers are encouraged to keep a safe distance from the water, wear life jackets when fishing from rocks or cliffs, and carry flotation devices. Hikers should plan routes carefully to avoid being cut off by rising tides,” warned Ingram.

The NSRI also reminds the public to avoid alcohol near water, supervise children at all times, wear life jackets when boating, and use the free SafeTrx app to log trips and request emergency assistance if needed.
