Hawks arrest 3 suspects for Zululand cash-in-transit heist

Three men appeared in court following a violent CIT robbery in Gluckstadt. Hawks recovered vehicles used in the R34 heist.

HAWKS members from the Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit arrested three suspects believed to have been involved in a recent cash-in-transit (CIT) heist.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 14 March in the Gluckstadt area in Zululand District.

Working with the Zululand District Task Team, the elite police unit arrested three suspects aged 35, 44 and 64.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said the incident occurred while the CIT vehicle was travelling on the R34 from Ulundi to Vryheid.

“Suspects fired multiple shots towards the armoured vehicle until it stopped. They then forced the security guards out and disarmed them of their service firearms.

“The suspects took the guards to an open field and used explosives to blow up the vehicle before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, two rifles and one 9mm pistol.

“The case was reported at Gluckstadt Police Station, and Hawks members attended the crime scene.

“Three weeks later, information was received about the whereabouts of the suspects and an operation was conducted.

“During the operation, the three suspects were arrested, and two vehicles used in the commission of the crime were seized,” said Mhlongo.
