Help Richards Bay star hockey player go on tour

Young hockey player Leah Hajee has been selected to play on the Southern Cape Sports Tours in September.

A talented young Richards Bay athlete, Leah Hajee (15), is calling on the community and local businesses to support her journey to join an international sports tour later this year.

During a recent hockey match in Empangeni, she was scouted to play on the Southern Cape Sports Tours which goes to the UK, touring London, York and Edinburgh in September.

Despite her sporting success, the costs associated with the tour are estimated at R60 000. Leah’s parents are seeking sponsorship and hosting fundraisers to meet the payment deadlines.

As a family they have covered the first payment to secure her spot, but are appealing to the community, businesses and potential sponsors to help them meet the target by July.

“She was last year selected for a tour to France but could not attend owing to finances,” said her mother, Colleen Ngubane.

The Empangeni High School pupil has established herself as a rising star in hockey and athletics, while also competing in netball, soccer and cricket.

Described as a hardworking and focused athlete with great potential, she still manages to keep an excellent academic record.

Her sporting journey began at Arboretum Primary School where she excelled in netball, transitioning to hockey in Grade 6.

Within her first year, she earned district colours, achieving U13 KZN colours within two years.

Her achievements extend to athletics, where she’s represented Northern Coastal for four consecutive years in sprint events and hurdles, showcasing her versatility as an all-round sportswoman.
