Richards Bay jockey reflects on Durban July ride, sets sights on future victory

After two major Grade 1 wins this season, Richards Bay jockey Tristan Godden remains optimistic about future Durban July glory.

“WE didn’t win it this year, but we are hoping for a win next year.”

This was the optimistic sentiment of Richards Bay jockey Tristan Godden, who competed in his third Hollywoodbets Durban July over the weekend.

Recovering from a hectic few days, the 30 year old described it as an ‘amazing event with a phenomenal crowd’, expressing sincere thanks to trainer Frank Robinson for the opportunity to ride the filly Mocha Blend.

Godden in December won the prestigious R6m Betway Summer Cup on the same filly. The 100-1 outsider stormed to victory, giving him his career-first Grade 1 victory.

“Being my first big race win to date, it was special to ride her again at the Hollywoodbets Durban July,” he commented. The build up to the Durban July was more intense than the actual race!”

He said it was extra special having his wife and mother in the crowd.

“I’m proud of what has been achieved this season; it’s been a great one with two big wins – the Summer Cup and the Golden Horse Sprint. I’m grateful for the opportunities and, as always, it’s great to have family, friends and our fans supporting always.”

Road to the Durban July

Godden remains connected to Zululand through his family home, with his parents and younger brother Bevan living in Wildenweide.

Hailing from a small town, Godden said racing was not big, and he had a keen interest in computers, thinking he would end up in IT or cybersecurity.

However, in Grade 7, a teacher told him about a jockey programme, which sparked interest.
His first application was unsuccessful as he was too young, but in 2012 he entered the programme, joining the SA Jockey Academy in Shongweni.

While his dad always takes pride in his racing, his mother was a bit nervous at first, but both his parents have always supported his career journey.

Godden’s wife Bianca, who he met in Mauritius and married last year, has also been very supportive of his career.

He says, when in Richards Bay he enjoys taking a break, fishing and spending time with family.
