4-digit personalised licence plates for Zululand motorists

KZN DoT announces 4-digit personalised licence numbers to be sold for motorists living in three Zululand districts

The KZN Department of Transport (DoT) says vehicle owners in King Cetshwayo, uMkhanyakude and Zululand districts will be able to purchase four-digit personalised licence numbers tomorrow (14 July) at the licensing department in Richards Bay.

The DoT said these will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis for motorists living in municipalities in these districts.

“To avoid disputes, customers will be required to come in person to the venue to procure. The following documents will be required: proof of address and a copy of the owner’s ID.

“Importantly, we wish to indicate that we have a limited number of personalised licence numbers available, hence customers will only be allowed to buy one each.

“We will continue to search for more available four-digit personalised licence numbers to be sold to motorists living in Empangeni and Ladysmith respectively,” said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma.

Duma, however, continues to warn motorists about the illegal sale of the four-digit personalised licence plates on social media.

“This practice is illegal and in violation of the National Road Traffic Act. Only the MEC for transport may establish a personalised licence number system in the province.

“I delegated this function to the Motor Transport Service’s Choice Numbers Section, which remains the only section authorised to sell personalised licence numbers in the province,” said Duma.
