VARIOUS parts of KwaZulu-Natal remain under a level 6 weather warning for disruptive rain, including the Zululand region.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the warning on Thursday as a strong ridging high-pressure system and a low-pressure system along the KZN coast, with a cut-off low over the western interior, are set to bring the inclement weather.

“These showers and rain will result in disruptive rain in the range of 50 – 100mm with a likelihood of significant impacts along the south coast and adjacent interior of KZN,” said the SAWS.

Affected areas in the Zululand region are KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, uMhlathuze and uMlalazi.
The Richards Bay Clean Air Association recorded 30.9mm in the CBD, with 37.7mm in Meerensee overnight.

Potential impacts
• Flooding of roads, bridges and settlements
• Fast-flowing rivers/streams could pose a danger to life
• Major disruption to traffic, as well as the potential for accidents, due to major roads being flooded
• Disruption to essential services
• Damage to mud-based houses

The SAWS urges residents to refrain from crossing swollen streams and rivers where water is above your ankles; if trapped in a vehicle, abandon it and climb to higher ground; in buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the potential flood line; switch off electricity at the supply point to any flood-affected buildings; Relocate livestock to a safe place.
