Zululand SAPS earn gold and silver awards
KZN acting police commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba handed over tokens of appreciation to district commissioners
In an effort to ensure accountability in tackling crime, the Performance Improvement Appreciation initiative has been introduced, assessing the 17 community-reported crimes during the first quarter of the current financial year.
Hosted by SAPS Academy in Chatsworth on Thursday, KZN acting police commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba handed over tokens of appreciation to district commissioners whose regions had improved.
Silver was awarded to districts that reduced crime in eight to 10 individual crime categories, among them King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts.
King Cetshwayo reduced crime in 10 individual crime categories, while uMkhanyakude recorded reductions in eight, with the district’s police cluster earning special recognition certificates for improving performance in crimes dependent on police action.
Topping the chart with gold status was Zululand District, which recorded reductions in
12 individual crime categories.
In her remarks, Major General Makoba said provincial management deemed it necessary to reward good work and recognise improved performance.
“We are all wearing this uniform because we want to serve and protect our communities. While there is a lot that needs to be done, we need to applaud good work and celebrate our gains,” she said.
However, the awards segment did not absolve district commissioners from accounting for crimes that continue to terrorise the communities they police.
The quarterly Provincial Management Forum is a session in which nothing is left unturned in the quest to create a safer KwaZulu-Natal.
