Late-night collision on the N2 outside Empangeni leaves 1 person dead, a further five seriously injured

One person died, and five others were seriously injured when two vehicles collided with a stationary coal truck on the N2 late on Thursday night.

The collision took place at about 11pm on the stretch between the R34/John Ross and R102 off-ramps outside Empangeni.

According to reports from the scene, a people carrier was travelling south in the slow lane of the N2 when a light delivery vehicle rear-ended a stationary truck.

Attempting to avoid that collision, the people carrier veered between the two trucks.

Two people sustained critical injuries, while a further three were seriously but not critically injured. All five were taken to Ngwelezana Hospital for further medical care.
