Tough going for Grantleigh’s hockey girls at KZN challenge

Grantleigh match previous finishes

GRANTLEIGH head coach Garth Bishop and his team claimed their third eighth place finish at the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge finals held at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof over the weekend.

Grantleigh qualified for the finals after winning the Northern Coastal Regional tournament earlier this year, matching their achievements of 2011 and 2016.

This year’s competition was tough, with teams boasting top quality provincial players.

The local private school did not get their tournament off to a great start, going down 0-3 to newcomers St John’s DSG from Pietermaritzburg in their first pool game, and then lost 1-3 King Edward High.

Grantleigh then met Amanzimtoti in their third round pool game, which ended in a goalless draw.

Grantleigh’s final game on Saturday was against Durban Girls College.

College, the only team to have made an appearance at every final had a challenging day and were more determined than ever to get back on track, drilling Grantleigh 5-0.

Victory also eluded Grantleigh in their next match against Our Lady of Fatima in the final classification games, going down 1-2.

After the log points were tallied, Grantleigh qualified for the seventh and eighth play-off against Wartburg.

It was a tight contest with a goalless scoreline at the final whistle, but Wartburg claimed the honours 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out.
