Club rugby season officially cancelled for 2020

The region's season was officially cancelled after the Zululand Rugby Sub Union received communications from SARU

LOCAL club rugby sides were able to compete in the popular annual Pongola Rugby Day and Bozas Cup in eShowe earlier this year, before the season was put on ice owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the country went through months of lockdown, there was still hope of shifting the season to early September, to finish in the first week of December.

But the 2020 club rugby season was officially cancelled after the Zululand Rugby Sub Union received communications from SARU stating that all amateur rugby would be cancelled for the year.

Zululand Rugby Sub Union President Junior Makhoba told the ZO that their focus now shifts onto planning the 2021 season.

‘Before the official start of the new season, the Zululand senior team will compete in the Ebbo Bastard competition against Durban, Midlands, Southern Natal and Northern Natal,’ said Makhoba.

‘We are the defending champions, having won the trophy last season.’

Club teams will then complete their normal pre-season training and compete in the popular annual Bozas Cup Tournament in eShowe and the Pongola Rugby Day before officially kicking off their season.

The Richards Bay Rugby Club will have one U20 team competing in the KZNRU League and their first and second teams will compete in the Premier League.

Empangeni Rugby Club, Richards Bay 3, Hluhluwe, eSikhawini, Unizulu, eShowe, Mtubatuba and Pongola will compete for the Stewart Shield and Weber Cup.

‘As a union, we are planning on launching our own U19 league next year which is not only exciting, but will aid with talent scouting for the growth of club rugby in the future.’
