SPCA on rural rescue mission
3 500 litres of water to rural livestock in the Mambuku, Ntambanana and Dondota distributed by Empangeni SPCA
EMPANGENI SPCA set out to distribute 3 500 litres of water to rural livestock in the Mambuku, Ntambanana and Dondota areas last Saturday.
The water was part of the 30 000 litres the SPCA received from Operation Hydrate last month.
SPCA staff were joined by regular volunteers Lesley Irvine and Sarel Ferreira, volunteers from the Richards Bay SPCA and Lindelani Mngomezulu, a detective at Empangeni SAPS who worked with the SPCA before joining the police.
‘We’ve had a great reception thus far. The communities always approach us to say thank you for bringing the water,’ said SPCA Senior Inspector Roland Fivaz.
‘It makes us feel like we’re accomplishing something great.’
Livestock in the Matakhane area, which are reliant on municipal trucks for water delivery, are next in line and inspectors hope to use the opportunity to get a feel for other problems faced by livestock in the area.
‘With no water available to dip animals, we are facing an increase of tick borne diseases. If we could get just one good rain, the dips could be filled and the problem might stabilise,’ said Fivaz.
As the drought drags on, the SPCA will use their reserves to continue assisting rural areas in need.
