RBM empowering Imbokodo graduates since 2007
For over a decade, RBM has broken barriers by introducing a female-based graduate programme that aims to capacitate female students to complete an 18-month programme that consists of introductory safety training, twelve months of theoretical studies towards a Minerals Processing qualification, followed by six months of practical training.

Imbokodo intake for 2019 captured during their business orientation week in July.
The ultimate aim of the programme is to address the shortage in women in the mining industry, and to absorb successful students into the company once their studies are complete. The qualification is certified by the Mining Qualification Authority. Senior Training Officer Thulani Sibiya says this programme is close to his heart and he feels like a father figure to the ladies who complete this programme every term. He says it is fantastic to witness how women from different backgrounds come together and form a sisterhood, encouraging one another to excel while destroying stereotypes.
Sthembile Khumalo, Sethabile Nango and Nomthandazo Mgwaba are among the group of 18 students who started their theoretical training in July 2019.
Having already completed a qualification in electrical engineering, Sthembile hopes that this programme will grow her career. She says she is excited to be one of the women that will change the world. Sethabile, who also holds an electrical engineering degree, says she has always longed to be a part of RBM, which is why she is thrilled to have been selected for the programme. She advises other women to apply too – regardless of their backgrounds.
‘Even if you’re from a less privileged community, you can make a difference – you just need to be ambitious. If it’s something you want, just follow your heart,’ she says.
Nomthandazo says entering a male dominated industry gives them an opportunity to prove that there is nothing that women cannot do if they set their minds to it. With her selection for this programme, she also hopes to inspire other women.
‘Never limit yourself because of what other people say. You can become anything you want, no matter what your background is. I am confident that I will make a name for women and motivate other women to follow their dreams.’ Sthembile Khumalo.
