Resident gives back to the community by helping the elderly
"We serve between 300 and 400 elders a day,” said Maphosa.
Kwa-Thema – Orene Nonhlanhla Maphosa (49) assists the elderly by providing them with tea, bread, fruit and water when they go to collect their grants at the Kwa-Thema Post Office.
“I do this in my personal capacity; I have a shop near the post office.
“I remember one afternoon an old lady came into my shop and she fainted due to her sugar levels.

“She told me she had been at the post office since 4am to stand in a long queue and she had not eaten anything. I was hurt.
“It was then and there that I decided I will help them with the little I have,” said Maphosa.
June marks six months since Maphosa started helping senior citizens.
She does her charity work every month on days grants are collected by the elderly.

She started the project alone and along the way had people contribute.
“People have helped with things like fruit and bread.
“For the past two months we have been doing a soup drive and supplying the elderly with soup and fruit. We serve between 300 and 400 elders a day,” said Maphosa.

The kindness of Maphosa and her co-workers in the drive has made the collection of grants for the elderly bearable.
They can wait in the long queue while seated and they can also take their medications freely after they’ve had something to eat, which is provided by Maphosa.
